New Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s First Challenge: To Heal A Party He’s Divided
Laurie Oakes passes on the latest astonishing argument from the Malcolm Turnbull camp against sacking him.
Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull
It’s this desperate: Turnbull is doing as well as Julia Gillard:
What was not known at the time [of Gillard’s sacking] was that focus group research showed preconditions for an improvement in Gillard’s polling were starting to appear.
She was getting “better quals”, as the pollsters say, referring to qualitative research into what people think as opposed to raw numbers.
While far from enamoured with her, the punters were … reluctantly acknowledging her achievement in getting legislation passed.
“She’s doing a lot,” was a line coming through.
The Gillard example should provide some hope for Malcolm Turnbull and his forces, particularly since Tony Abbott is no Rudd….
The Turnbull Government is being seen to govern. It is getting runs on the board.
If it can keep this up consistently, without being diverted by internal divisions or Labor provocations, it might — like Gillard — start to get better “quals”.
Or not. And where’s the evidence that Gillard was ever going to translate those “quals” into votes?
Hmm. This is like giving General Custer top marks for persistence at the Battle of Little Big Horn.
There is in fact a better analogy with Gillard that Oakes has missed.
Like Gillard, Turnbull is spending lots of money he doesn’t actually have.
Like Gillard, Turnbull is pushing a form of carbon tax that will raise electricity bills without lowering the temperature.
Like Gillard, Turnbull is setting new records of national debt.
Like Gillard, Turnbull is hunting for money for a National Disability Insurance Scheme that is already blowing out.
Like Gillard, Turnbull is throwing billions of dollars at a Gonski school funding plan.
Like Gillard, Turnbull is throwing billions at a Gonski school funding program without first working out if it will actually lift school standards.
Like Gillard, Turnbull would rather talk to the ABC than conservative presenters.
Like Gillard, Turnbull refuses to reform the ABC and make it balanced.
Like Gillard, Turnbull is negotiating a people swap to empty detention centres.
Like Gillard, Turnbull is enraging conservative voters and the Liberal base.
Like Gillard, Turnbull is boasting of how much legislation he is getting passed.
Like Gillard, Turnbull is heading for a massive defeat.
