A 47-year-old man has been arrested and faces a maximum penalty of seven years' jail on child stealing charges stemming from a Family Court dispute.

Australian Federal Police (AFP), with the assistance of Queensland police, last night arrested the man from Cairns after an extensive nine-month investigation spanning a number of states.

An AFP spokesman said it will be alleged the man did not return a young girl after a contact visit and used a number of false identities to evade police detection.

The child, from Brisbane, was reunited with her mother this morning.

The man appeared in the Cairns Magistrates Court today charged with one count each of obstructing Commonwealth officials, preventing a recovery order and child-stealing.

Child-stealing carries a maximum penalty of seven years' jail.

No bail was sought and he is expected to reappear in court at a later date.
