THANK YOU FOR HELPING TO END ANIMAL CRUELTY
COULD YOU DO ONE MORE THING?
Your support is so crucial right now. By signing our petition, you’ve asked world leaders to take vital action - thank you. Would you also consider making a donation today?

It takes time, money and persistence to end factory farming. A gift from you could help end cruelty to animals, remove the threat to wildlife, and protect the future of our planet.

MONTHLY DONATION
SINGLE DONATION
Your monthly donation could help save farm animals from suffering and build a brighter future for us all.

FARMED ANIMALS ARE SUFFERING.
Most of the 87 billion animals farmed for food each year are being caged or crammed in cruel factory farms around the world.

In intensive systems, mother pigs may be imprisoned in narrow crates, unable to move freely, when they are pregnant and when nursing their piglets. They are deprived of almost everything that makes life worth living. Most will never experience the outside world. These animals are exhausted, and their suffering is immense.

You can stop this nightmare by donating now to help end all cruel factory farming practices.

OUR WILDLIFE IS DISAPPEARING.
Factory farming takes animals off the land and packs them into confined spaces such as sheds and feedlots.

The feed for these animals is often grown in vast crop plantations, usually doused in artificial fertiliser and chemical pesticides. Such intensive crop farming leads to the destruction of forests and other habitats and hastens the demise of wildflowers, insects, birds, bees, and other wildlife.

Since the widespread adoption of factory farming, the world has lost more than two-thirds of its wildlife.

OUR CLIMATE IS IN THE DANGER ZONE.
On top of driving biodiversity loss and extinctions, animal farming plays a massive role in deforestation, desertification, water pollution, and coastal dead zones.

The livestock sector produces more greenhouse gases than the direct emissions of all the world’s planes, trains, and cars put together.

The evidence is clear: Factory farming is a cruel and broken system that needs to stop.

TOGETHER WE CAN END FACTORY FARMING
Compassion in World Farming, funded by our amazing supporters, has been leading a coalition of 170 organizations to support our "End the Cage Age" campaign. Our European Citizens' Initiative was signed by almost 1.4 million individuals. As a result, the European Commission has committed to consider proposing legislation that would phase out caged farming across all 27 member states.

This is a historic achievement. And, together, we can go even further.

Global leaders have the power to reform our food system. But we need brave and determined people, just like you, to convince them to act now.

WHERE YOUR MONEY GOES
For every £1, 77p goes back into our work. The remainder is invested in fundraising to grow our campaigns and the global movement against the world’s biggest cause of animal cruelty.

dates Born Free celebrates Elsa
We remember the iconic lioness, who was born on this day 68 years ago. In her memory, our charity is devoted to impactful lion conservation and her legacy lives on in Meru National Park, Kenya.

Today would have been the birthday of Elsa the lioness, who was born on 28th January 1958, in Meru National Park in Kenya. Born Free features Elsa on our logo and the true story of her journey to freedom inspires everything we do. We never forget the importance of the individual and that wild animals belong in the wild.

Elsa was successfully returned to the wild in 1958 by the conservationists Joy and George Adamson, after she was orphaned as a young cub. This extraordinary journey was featured in the classic film ‘Born Free’, starring our Co-Founders Dame Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers MBE. Today, inspired by Elsa, our charity is devoted to lion conservation, including an extensive programme in Meru to monitor and protect wild lions, and help them live peacefully alongside local people.

We have even named a group of lions in her honour and Elsa’s Pride is now the largest lion family in Meru, with 26 individuals including several cubs born in 2023. Our Pride of Meru team works hard to keep them safe including a dramatic rescue last year when Cheri, an integral part of Elsa’s Pride, was spotted with a serious head injury – perhaps due to an altercation with another pride. With the help of the Kenya Wildlife Service vet, the three-year-old lioness was successfully darted, treated and released to join her family, monitored by our team to ensure she made a quick recovery.

The well-being of every lion matters to Born Free and it is vital we keep them safe. Today, around 23,000 wild lions remain across Africa, a decline of 87% since ‘Born Free’ was filmed 60 years ago. But, since our lion conservation work began in Kenya in 2010, the country’s lion population has increased by an extraordinary 25%, to over 2,500. Conservation really works!

You can help this vital and successful work to continue by adopting Elsa’s Pride.
