A struggling builder and his son, 15, have been forced to live in his rented car after being told they faced a two-year wait for public housing.

Rocco Paravizzini, who has been on the public housing high-priority waiting list for 18 months, was forced to take refuge in the vehicle this week.

The father and his son, Adam, slept in the cabin of his ute outside Westfield shopping complex in Airport West for three nights, washing in the centre's toilets and eating at McDonald's.

Public housing officers stepped in to help only after the Sunday Herald Sun approached them over his case. It was claimed the same bureaucrats had earlier said Mr Paravizzini and his family did not qualify for urgent assistance because he was a good father and did not have anger or money management issues.

A growing number of Victorians live "rough" while waiting for public housing.
