PRIME Minister John Howard yesterday ruled out gay marriages in Australia because they did nothing to support "survival of the species".

Mr Howard said he was not attacking or discriminating against gays but marriage was a "bedrock" institution.
"It's very much about the raising of children . . . and the continuation of our species," he said.

Mr Howard said marriage was the best environment to raise children.

The Vatican last week said gay marriages threatened society. US President George W. Bush said marriage was between a man and a woman.
