A FORMER army major who led a UN mission in East Timor was yesterday released on a 12-month suspended jail sentence for downloading more than 1000 images of child porn.
Kenneth Paul Chapman, 53, who has lost his marriage and been disowned by his church and many of his former army colleagues, was arrested during an international operation against internet child porn.
AFP officers seized a laptop containing 1128 picture files and 25 videos of child pornography, including torture, when they raided Chapman's Werribee home last year. The children were as young as six months.
Melbourne County Court judge David Parsons said Chapman, who now lives in Queensland, had pleaded guilty, had no prior convictions and had shown remorse. Judge Parsons convicted Chapman and suspended the 12-month sentence for two years
