GENTLEMEN, start your blenders: it is the age of the house husband.

With women joining or returning to the workforce in increasing numbers, the number of men leaving jobs to care for their children has more than doubled in the past five years.

Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show 165,000 men dropped out of the workforce to raise their kids last year, compared with 79,000 in 2000.

Sex Discrimination commissioner Pru Goward said: "It says men have discovered the joy of parenting. They've let go of the obsession, 'Will anyone take me seriously if I'm not the breadwinner?' "
