Victoria's environmental watchdog is taking Porsche to court for allegedly polluting Melbourne's Yarra River.

The Environment Protection Authority Victoria has laid five charges against the luxury car retailer and two of its directors following an investigation into an oil spill that began in Abbotsford on January 16.

The authority alleges it polluted the river, causing an environmental hazard.

Boats drag an absorption float across the surface near the Barkers Road bridge in Kew.

Metropolitan Fire Brigade members were called to the scene underneath the Barkers Road bridge about 7am, where they worked to contain the spill.

Witnesses said the spill stretched about a kilometre along the riverbank, from Abbotsford to Kew.

The oil was thought to have spilled from a stormwater drain, an MFB spokeswoman said at the time.

Containment booms were set up to prevent the oil from moving up or downstream, and skimmers were used to remove the contained oil the next morning.

An EPA spokesman said it would not be making any further comment as the matter was before the courts.
