A Melbourne man who was on a baseball scholarship at an American university has been shot dead while jogging in Oklahoma.
Christopher Lane, 22, was jogging in the small town of Duncan on Friday when he was shot in the back in a drive-by.
Police have arrested three teenagers aged 15, 16 and 17.
They will be charged with first-degree murder and could potentially face the death penalty.
Lane was on a baseball scholarship at East Central University and was reportedly two weeks away from celebrating his 23rd birthday.
Duncan Police Chief said Lane was believed to have just returned from a trip to Australia and had only been staying at his girlfriend's residence for about three days.
He said the shooting appears to have been a random attack.
"He apparently was jogging, he went by a residence where these three boys were, they picked him as a target, they went out and got in a vehicle and followed him," Chief Ford told the ABC's AM program.
"He jogged probably another, I don't know, I said a quarter mile, maybe a little better than that, to the north of Country Club (Road).
"[They] came up from behind and basically shot him in the back with a small calibre weapon. Then sped away."
Chief Ford said he had not seen anything like it in 30 years of law enforcement.
"No, I've been at this 30 years and I have, I've seen some pretty weird stuff but as far as targeting of a complete stranger, this target of opportunity, probably not," he said.
Chief Ford said the town, with a population of about 23,000, was "outraged".
"Especially for it to be someone where we welcome folks, this is not the behaviour of this town," he said.
Chief Ford said the murder weapon was yet to be recovered but was believed to be of low-calibre and likely to have been stolen.
Essendon Baseball Club in Melbourne says it is saddened by the loss of a "truly talented young man".
A statement published on its website reads:
"Essendon Baseball Club is deeply saddened by the passing of Christopher Lane.
"Chris was a truly talented and highly respected young man whose friendship was valued by all who had the good fortune to know him.
"His loss is felt by each and every member of the Essendon family and our thoughts and prayers are with the Lane family during this incredibly difficult time."

Why would 3 kids feel the need to do such a thing?
Who were their parents and what do they have to say?
What was the background of these kids?
What psychological factors were present in these teenagers heads?
How much of America's daily war killing mentality and propaganda affected these three boys?
How about movies and computer games that kill for fun?
Was it racial, prejudicial or territorial, nothing is ever just random?
This is by no means a freak and isolated accident not in our control, there is a man made cause. These killing teenagers were a product of society. Whether society and people really want to own up and take full responsibility for these 3 kids will be another story. Chances are in a few months the media and public at large will have forgotten this sad event, distracted again by their busy lives of going around in circles.
F4J and all its members send our condolences to the Lane family.

Whilst news only reports the surface facts (a part of the how it was done), to get any real resolve to such a tragedy one needs the full story (why it was done to prevent future mishaps) including answers to such questions as:
